Little Cupcake Bakeshop | Brooklyn, NY

598 Vanderbilt Ave, Brooklyn, NY 11238

We got the Golden Vanilla Cupcake, Golden Chocolate Cupcake, Hostess Cupcake, Brooklyn Blackout Cupcake, Southern Red Velvet Cupcake, Strawberry Cupcake, and Chocolate Pudding.

The Golden Vanilla Cupcake is a typical classic. The cake is moist and the buttercream is sweet, just a bit too sweet for my liking. The Golden Chocolate was my favorite because it had the soft and moist yellow cake paired with a chocolate buttercream whose sweetness was mellowed out by the addition of cocoa. The Brooklyn Blackout on the other hand, wasn't what I was expecting. Brooklyn Blackout traditionally has a chocolate pudding center. This was just chocolate cake with chocolate buttercream icing and I guess a bit of fudge as well. I thought it was a little sweet and the cake was a bit dry.

The Hostess Cupcake was also disappointing. The cake was dry and the creme center was just vanilla buttercream, making it too sweet and the wrong texture. The Southern Red Velvet was good although again, not traditional. The icing tasted slightly different from the vanilla buttercream, so I think there was an addition of cream cheese, however if I didn't have the two to compare, I wouldn't think there was any cream cheese in the icing at all. And finally, the Strawberry Cupcake had very much a strawberry flavor. There were bits of strawberry in the cake, although I also believe there was artificial strawberry flavor added as the flavor was so strong. It's something I will ask next time, if they add artificial flavoring to it, because it is a very good cupcake, but I prefer to avoid artificial flavors.

Lastly we tried the chocolate pudding, which has vegan chocolate cupcake chunks mixed throughout. I thought the pudding itself was very good, it wasn't sweet and the texture was perfect, however, the cupcake pieces had an off flavor. I like the idea of the cupcake in it because it makes it like a mud pie, however I'm not sure why they use the vegan cupcake. Traditionally pudding is made with milk and depending on the recipe, eggs or butter are also used. I don't believe the actual pudding was vegan as it wasn't labeled as such and the woman at the counter only told me the cupcake was vegan. My thought would be they never sell out of their vegan chocolate cupcakes and when they start to get stale they add them to the pudding. Although I'm not sure this is the case or not.

Overall my favorites were the Golden Vanilla, Strawberry, and Southern Red Velvet.
